History & legends
It is said that the name "Merlot" derives from the French word merle, meaning "blackbird", a bird that feeds on grapes. It is believed that blackbirds were particularly attracted to Merlot grapes, perhaps because of their sweet flavour, and that this is why the grape variety was given this name.
